Sadly we understand that Walkers Cay was devastated by a hurricane in October 2004 and it is our belief that it is currently up for sale.

The Island

Walkers CayWalkers Cay is the most northerly of the inhabited Abaco islands of the Bahamas and is privately own by the family of the inventor of the aerosol valve. It is a small island with two runways, a marina the hotel and no roads. The staff zoom around on golf buggies and there is one pickup truck to transport the luggage from the small aircraft you arrive in. At the end of one runway bull sharks can often be seen and at the end of the other are what we believed were lemon sharks.

The diving

Average water temperature: 25 Celsius

Wetsuit used: 3mm full wetsuit

Shark RodeoThe reason we went to this island in the Bahamas is Sharks and to be honest other than the shark diving area there were no other notable dive sites. The dive shop seemed to be well stocked but as we have our own equipment we just needed air tanks and weights, it's also worth noting for those who are interested Nitrox is currently not available however we also did not dive much below 12 meters. I would also say the dive briefing were not very good except on the shark feed dives.

Shark Ice CreamThe boat dives consisting of two morning dives and an afternoon dive. The main dive site for us was called Spiral Canyons. This is where the shark feeding takes place. A ice block of frozen fish is anchored to the bottom, once the dive master is happy he beckons you forward for your position next to the coral wall and then you can swim around in the resulting mass of Caribbean reef sharks (around 50-100)

Food and Entertainment

Sunset at Wlakers CayThe package was half board, and while the food was very good the menu was limited as I suspect it was catering for shorter that our 10 day stay.

The breakfast, dinner, and the evening meal were all served in the dining room.

The bar by the swimming pool.

Travel

Cruising SharkThe holiday was booked through Harlequin Holidays. The outward flight from Heathrow on British Airway and flew to Miami which was about 8 hours. On arrival we then made our own way to Fort Lauderdale for one night before then traveling to Fort Lauderdale airport for the onward lunch time flight to Walkers Cay on Chalks Airline (grand name for a company with about half a dozen, small planes). The return flight was early afternoon on Chalks Airline to Fort Lauderdale airport and again we made our own way back to Miami for the flight home.
